SOTA Business models in FLOSS

From the pioneer age in the early 80, free open source software (FOSS) has gained a strong momentum in the software industry both for internal use and for creating commercial systems, by big industry actors as well as SMEs. As stated by Tim O'Reilly, FOSS entails a “paradigm shift” in the software industry, giving birth to many new business models. This report presents in a first chapter a state of the art on the typology of the business models used in the industry for drawing revenues from opensource software. The typology consists of the following models:

  1. independent software vendor business models
  2. ecosystem enabler business models
  3. software as a service vendor business models
  4. service provider business models
  5. combination of OSS components with hardware
  6. brand selling
  7. advertisement
  8. global fee redistributed to authors. In the two next chapters, the report presents case studies related on the one hand to big industry actors, and on the other hand to SMEs.
